A good choli accentuates the cut and design of the sari, ghagra or the lehenga. Traditionally cholis were made with round necklines or maybe a square neckline. However, in recent times, these cholis have come up with a mind boggling number of styles and patterns. The sleeves of cholis can be short, three quarters or even full. In fact more contemporary designs have off shoulder cholis or even with puffed sleeves. These upper garment are generally tight fitting and above or till the hips. In a sharara, cholis extend way below the waistline.

Backless cholis are a very Bollywood kind of design. A tie back choli is also a contemporary design which has sprung from its older version. The Indian cholis which are teamed with lehengas or related outfits for occasions have rich embroidery on them. Thread work, patch work, sequins, beads and even semi precious stones are used to bring in a unique look. Gota, zardosi or kundan styles of decoration are used innovatively on the Indian cholis, which are a huge rage amongst all age groups of Indian women.
